
I have thoroughly been enjoying the book Ask and It Is Given: Learning to Manifest Your Desires
For example, say you want a new car. If you continuously focus your attention on what a hunk of junk your old one is, how much you hate it, etc., you don't allow the energy of pure desire (I want a new car) to manifest because you are ultimately spending all your energy actually holding on to that old car by keeping it's negative aspects first and foremost in your mind. Remember that the law of attraction is "Like attracts like."
If you instead focus your energy on the car you want and the color you prefer, and how it will feel to sit in it, and where you will go... you begin to project the energy of pure desire, and through that same law of attraction, the universe responds (matches) to your energy and you start to actually bring your desires closer to you.
Similar concepts have been discussed in books like The Secret
I can speak from personal experience that these concepts work and all you have to do is start putting them into practice. The less you focus your energy on the things you don't want, you free up energy to focus on what you do want.
PS: It is never enough to simply "wish" your dreams into existence. Action and hard work is imperative to achieving your goals. Though maybe "hard work" isn't so much so when you approach things with clear intentions of what you want to accomplish. ;o)
