Once in a while, I wonder if I take a piece of art too far. I started this mandala with watercolor paints in a Cachet watercolor sketchbook, then doodled over it with some Faber Castell Pitt Artist Brush Pens, (which I love) and then added the black pen (also a Pitt pen - F nib) over top.

I don't think you did - I think it looks great!
Better question: Did you go far enough? I'm a new reader, sent over from notebookism. I just love your reviews, and I immediately followed your lead with some of my own mandalas. Yours are just wonderful!
CAN one go too far with a mandala? I think not! This is gorgeous.
Wow! Beautiful work.
I guess the question is, why do you think you took it too far? is there something about it that doesn't call to you?
I personally love it, although i've always been a huge fan of the traditional "outline colour in black" style. I find it very graphic and crisp.

I don't think so. It doesn't look overworked in any way to me. I like that it spreads into the area where the binding is. It gives it a feeling as though it is full of energy. It almost makes me wish it was in a book without the spiral binding so it could spill onto the next page. You make great use of your Pitt pens, they seem like a great compliment to the watercolour.
No such thing as 'too far'! Mandalas are not right or wrong. At least that's what a certain 'Bean' has told me. *S*
I think it's lovely and intricate. I can look at it a long time and still see something new in it.
Cheers.
Thank you Stacey!
Kevin - thank you - and I'm very happy to hear that you are working on some mandalas of your own.
JD & John - Thank you!
Liz and Marsha - this one wasn't done in my typical "sit down and draw the mandala" fashion. In fact, I'd call this one more of an attempt at art than just a mandala for meditation. It started as a watercolor, and then I drew the mandala over top. Then I went back and added the marker - so it's almost like 3 pieces in one. In looking at it, I had wondered if I took all of the (marker) embellishments too far. I guess not, as it's just a different "kind" of piece than I'm used to.
Gentian - thank you! I'm glad that you see a lot of energy in it. And yes - I like the use of Pitt pens with watercolor very much. The shades of the markers match up quite perfectly with the paints.
I am a marketing "professional," but a musician from early childhood (I was a composition and arranging major in college). Your mandalas spoke to me in a way that painting, drawing, etc., never has. You create beautiful "essence art," and it has inspired me. Thank you.
Anon - thank you, that means a lot to me. :o)
